French astronaut Sophie Adenot
Sophie Adenot is a French astronaut, born on July 5, 1982, in Cosne-Cours-sur-Loire (Nièvre).
In 2022, she was selected as an astronaut by the European Space Agency (ESA).
After several years of training, the Epsilon mission is Sophie Adenot's first spaceflight aboard the International Space Station (ISS), starting in February 2026.
Sophie Adenot holds an engineering degree from ISAE-SUPAERO in Toulouse, where she specialized in spacecraft and aircraft flight dynamics. She also completed a master's degree in human factors engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, USA.
After completing her studies, Sophie Adenot became a helicopter cockpit design engineer at Airbus Helicopters in Marignane, France.
Starting in 2005, she joined the French Air and Space Force and underwent military training to become a helicopter pilot. She held several positions after her training:
- Pilot within a squadron specializing in Search and Rescue (SAR) and Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR) missions at Cazaux Air Base, from 2008 to 2012.
- Chief of flight training and mission captain within the High Authority Transport Squadron in Villacoublay, from 2012 to 2017.
- Helicopter experimental test pilot at the Cazaux Flight Test Center for the DGA (Direction générale de l'armement / Directorate General of Armaments), between 2019 and 2022.
Sophie Adenot has accumulated over 3,000 flight hours on 22 different helicopters.
She is fluent in French, English, German, and Russian, as well as having some knowledge of Spanish—an essential asset for communicating with her international colleagues aboard the ISS!
