CNES’s space science research and exploration committee (CERES) is a consultative body tasked with assisting the heads of the agency’s Universe Science and Exploration & Human Spaceflight programmes. It helps identify the French scientific community’s priorities in these fields and advises on strategy.
Overview
CERES covers the fields of astronomy, exobiology, fundamental physics and space exploration.
The committee is backed by seven subject matter groups focused on the following key themes:
- Laws of physics governing the universe
- Origin and evolution of the universe
- Mechanisms underlying the Sun-planet system
- Formation and evolution of the solar system, exoplanets, habitability and comparative planetology
- Physical processes of matter
- Life sciences and human space exploration
CERES and its seven subject matter groups are tasked with making recommendations to CNES on the scientific priorities and directions of the agency’s space programmes. Where needed, they may also take up any issue related to space programmes and projects connected to their scientific domains of expertise. They are also in charge of science foresight, reporting to the agency’s five-yearly Science Survey Seminar (SPS).
CERES relays the recommendations and priorities expressed by each of its subject matter groups. It is systematically consulted before new projects falling within its remit are given the go-ahead. It also provides scientific input on future directions (Phases 0, R&T, demonstrators), Balloon Committee decisions, selection of PhD and postdoc students receiving CNES research grants, mission extension reviews and preparation of France’s positions at ESA ministerial conferences.
Members
CERES is made up of 20 members from the chairs of its subject matter groups, CNES subject matter experts and independent scientific experts.
It meets about four times a year prior to each meeting of the agency’s Science Programmes Committee (CPS), at which the chair of CERES presents an overview of the committee’s work and recommendations. CERES representatives also take part in reviews and meetings involved in this process.
Representatives of partner organizations and CNES directorates and departments involved in universe science and exploration and human spaceflight programmes are invited to CERES meetings. CPS members and the chair of the TOSCA Earth, oceanography, land surfaces and atmosphere committee are also invited.
