    Date de publication:

    2 Août 2019

Ariane 5 ECA orbited two telecommunications satellites, TIBA-1 et GX5, from the Guiana Space Centre. The 250th Ariane launch expected on November 22 evening has been postponed due to a power supply anomaly in the ground segment of the launch complex on friday and bad weather conditions on monday. Liftoff finally happened on November 23, 2019 at 18:23 (Kourou time)/22:23 (Paris time) after a few minutes delay due to a new "rouge meteo".

  5. Forecasting weather and understanding climate with CFOSat

    Date de publication:

    29 Octobre 2018

CFOSat (China-France Oceanography Satellite) was launched today, Monday 29 October, into low Earth orbit. This first joint mission with China is set to deliver data for weather forecasting and long-term climate research. Thierry Amiot, principal investigator for the satellite’s SWIM instrument at CNES, and Lotfi Aouf, a research scientist at the French national weather service Meteo-France, explain.

  6. CNES DURING LOCKDOWN- SPACE SERVING OUR PLANET AND SOCIETY

    Date de publication:

    6 Avril 2020

During the current lockdown, CNES has adapted its organization to protect the health of its workforce, play its part in the national effort to slow the spread of the epidemic and sustain the nation’s economic activity. To this end, the agency has instituted home working on a massive scale across its four field centres in Paris Les Halles, Paris Daumesnil, at the Toulouse Space Centre and at the Guiana Space Centre, thanks to the capacity of its information system and the huge efforts of its staff. However, CNES’s response plan requires certain employees to be physically present on site and all steps have been taken to ensure they can carry out all of their tasks to the usual high standards of quality while strictly applying the recommended distancing and transmission reduction precautions.

  7. DATA FROM FRENCH-CHINESE CFOSAT SATELLITE ON STREAM FOR SCIENTIFIC COMMUNITY

    Date de publication:

    19 Février 2020

29 October 2018, China launched the French-Chinese CFOSat satellite from its launch base in the Gobi Desert in Inner Mongolia. This first joint science mission between the two nations to study ocean winds and waves therefore recently celebrated its first year in orbit. Its new observations are now available to the world’s scientific community to gain new insights into the ocean surface.

  9. Strateole-2 balloon flight campaign launched from Mahé in The Seychelles

    Date de publication:

    31 Octobre 2019

Strateole-2 is an international Earth-observation programme using stratospheric superpressure balloons being led by CNES and a consortium of research laboratories attached to CNRS, the French national scientific research centre, including LMD and LATMOS at the Pierre-Simon Laplace Institute (see below). The programme’s goal is to study atmospheric dynamics in the intertropical zone. Three campaigns are planned from the autumn of 2019 to the spring of 2025 to acquire in-situ measurements and remote-sensing data from the balloons. The first balloon launch is scheduled from 1 November. The first two flights will be carrying ‘dummy’ gondolas without scientific instruments to see how the balloons and the onboard flight management system behave at the start of the flight. The window for the first four science flights runs from 17 to 30 November.

  12. Launch of French-Chinese CFOSat satellite- CNES and CNRS join forces to study climate change in the world’s oceans

    Date de publication:

    22 Octobre 2018

The French-Chinese CFOSat satellite will be launched on Monday 29 October atop a Chinese Long March 2C vehicle from the Jiuquan launch base in Inner Mongolia. This science mission to study ocean surface winds and waves is the first joint project pursued under French-Chinese space cooperation. Developed by CNES and the China National Space Administration (CNSA), the satellite will carry two radar instruments: SWIM (Surface Waves Investigation and Monitoring), developed by France, which will survey the length, height and direction of waves; and SCAT (wind SCATterometer), developed by China, which will measure the strength and direction of winds. The two instruments will enable measurements of winds and waves to be acquired simultaneously for the first time. CFOSat will thus characterize the dynamics of waves and how they interact with surface winds more comprehensively than ever before.
