    Surveying Earth from its 400-kilometre vantage point in orbit, the International Space Station (ISS) is poised for two key events at the end of the year on which France will be casting a close eye. The first will see three new astronauts arriving, among them Frenchman Thomas Pesquet, who will be conducting the Proxima mission designed and planned by CNES and the CADMOS centre for the development of microgravity applications and space operations (see p. 8). And in December, a more strategic event will be taking place in Lucerne, Switzerland, where the ESA council meeting at ministerial level is set to decide on its future contributions to the ISS after 2020.

  12. 2 months to go for Léopold Eyharts

    At the age of 50, Léopold Eyharts is readying for his second spaceflight. 6 December, he will embark on the U.S. Space Shuttle Atlantis for a flight to the International Space Station (ISS), where he will stay for more than two months. One of his tasks on this mission will be to commission the European Columbus laboratory.

    A former test pilot and an astronaut since 1990, Léopold Eyharts is now training for his 2nd spaceflight, on the STS-122 mission of the U.S. Space Shuttle Discovery in October, which will be carrying Europe’s Columbus laboratory to the International Space Station. Eyharts will be staying on board the ISS for 2 months to oversee activation and checkout of the laboratory.

  14. Long-duration ISS mission under the watchful eye of CADMOS

    Space Shuttle Discovery lifted off from Florida yesterday. European astronaut Thomas Reiter on board is en route to the International Space Station, where he will be spending 6 to 7 months aloft. This long-duration mission will be closely watched by the CADMOS1 centre in France, responsible for monitoring experiments on the station and communications between Reiter and teams on the ground.

In fact it is intended for Thomas Reiter, a European astronaut which reached the ISS last July. Reiter will be the first to taste these dishes in the weeks to come. As planned, the russian Progress spacecraft carried the meals yesterday.
