    Friday 23 November, Pascale Ehrenfreund, Chair of the Executive Board of the German space agency DLR (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft und Raumfahrt), was welcomed at the Toulouse Space Centre (CST) by CNES President Jean-Yves Le Gall, Chief Operating Officer Lionel Suchet and CST Director Frédéric Pradeilles. This visit reflects DLR’s interest in the work being done at the CST, CNES’s field centre in the Occitanie region where 72% of its employees are located.

    Thursday 1 February, the German space agency DLR held its traditional New Year event in Berlin. On this occasion, CNES President Jean-Yves Le Gall met Pascale Ehrenfreund, Chair of DLR’s Executive Board, and Dr. Wolfgang Scheremet, Director General of Industrial Policy at BMWi, the German Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy. His visit provided the opportunity to conduct a status check ahead of the key milestones this year for ESA and EU programmes, as well as for bilateral projects in the fields of innovation and climate. It also served to prepare for the next ESA Council meeting in Paris on 13 and 14 March.

  4. Intense sequence for CNES, DLR and JAXA- Hayabusa2 and MASCOT arrive at asteroid Ryugu

    The Japanese Hayabusa2 space probe has reached the end of its 3.2-billion-kilometre journey with its passenger, the French-German MASCOT (Mobile Asteroid Surface Scout) lander. Launched in 2014, Hayabusa2 has completed three orbits of the Sun in four years, after which it began a few weeks ago its very slow approach to its final destination. Since today, Hayabusa2 is now escorting Ryugu at a close distance of some 20 kilometres, collecting images and data from this celestial object that spins on itself in a little more than seven and a half hours. MASCOT is scheduled to land on the asteroid in early October.

    Wednesday 3 October at the press briefing on MASCOT held at the 69th International Astronautical Congress (IAC) in Bremen, CNES President Jean-Yves Le Gall, Pascale Ehrenfreund, Chair of the Executive Board of the German space agency DLR, and Hiroshi Yamakawa, President of the Japan Aerospace eXploration Agency (JAXA), signed a joint statement regarding future French-German cooperation to design a rover for the MMX mission led by JAXA to explore Mars’ moons Phobos and Deimos.

    In the presence of Thierry Mandon, Secretary of State for Higher Education and Research, and Brigitte Zypries, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) and Federal Government Coordinator of German Aerospace and Information Technology Policy, CNES and its German counterpart DLR signed on Wednesday 14 September in Berlin a cooperation agreement to design, build and operate the French-German MERLIN satellite devoted to measuring concentrations of atmospheric methane, a potent greenhouse gas.
