    The docking of the NG-16 resupply spacecraft with the ISS in August marked the arrival in orbit of the latest French experiments designed by CNES as part of the Alpha mission. After 152 days in space, astronaut Thomas Pesquet has already completed four spacewalks and performed a host of science experiments from CADMOS/CNES and from other space agencies like ESA and NAS. His schedule is still busy.

    Thursday 17 November at 21:20 CET, France’s ESA astronaut Thomas Pesquet will lift off aboard a Russian Soyuz launcher from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan alongside Russian commander Oleg Novitsky (Roscosmos) and U.S. astronaut Peggy Whitson (NASA). The Soyuz spacecraft is then scheduled to berth with the International Space Station on Saturday 19 November at around 23:00.

    Thursday 17 November at 21:20 CET, Soyuz completed a flawless launch from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, sending aloft France’s ESA astronaut Thomas Pesquet, Russian mission commander Oleg Novitsky (Roscosmos) and U.S. astronaut Peggy Whitson (NASA). The spacecraft is scheduled to berth with the International Space Station on Saturday 19 November at around 23:00.

    On a visit to the Vaulx-en-Velin planetarium, President François Hollande spoke to astronaut Thomas Pesquet during a live link-up with the International Space Station (ISS) to engage youngsters and get them interested in space as CNES kicks off a unique operation allowing 1,300 schools to perform the same experiments as the astronaut on the station.

  10. CNES’s DECLIC instrument en route to the International Space Station

    First launched in 2009, the DECLIC scientific instrument was recovered and returned to Earth by NASA in 2014 after a five-year stay on the International Space Station (ISS) for maintenance by CNES, which designed and built the instrument. The result of a joint science effort with NASA, DECLIC is now on its way back to the station aboard the Cygnus resupply vehicle successfully sent aloft by an Antares launcher during the night of Monday 17 to Tuesday 18 October. Scheduled to dock with the station during the night of Saturday 22 October, Cygnus is also carrying scientific equipment for Thomas Pesquet’s Proxima mission.

    Tuesday 3 October at the Toulouse Space Centre (CST), Thomas Pesquet came to see the managers of the experiments developed by CNES for the Proxima mission. Together, they reviewed how the experiments went on the ground and aboard the International Space Station (ISS), and discussed initial lessons learned. CADMOS is the unit at CNES that developed and monitored the seven CNES experiments on Thomas’ mission. No fewer than 35 engineers were involved. For the CNES team, Proxima is a total success that has confirmed the expertise, technical know-how and passion driving the French space sector.

    The 25th National Science Week, organized by the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Research from Friday 7 to Sunday 16 October, opened today at the Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie in Paris. On this occasion, French ESA astronaut Thomas Pesquet, the patron of this year’s event, presented his future Proxima mission on the International Space Station (ISS) to the public and several hundred children. CNES and ESA also took advantage of the event to sign an agreement covering the scientific experiments he will be performing on the ISS.

    Monday 15 January in Marcy l’Étoile (near Lyon), Proxima mission astronaut Thomas Pesquet detailed, during a conference, lessons learned from the Aquapad experiment he performed on the International Space Station (ISS). Developed jointly by CNES and bioMérieux, a world leader in in vitro diagnostics, Aquapad is an innovative device for conducting microbiological diagnostics on a space crew’s drinking water. On this occasion, bioMérieux’s Chairman & CEO Alexandre Mérieux and Gilles Rabin, CNES’s Director of Innovation, Applications and Science, signed a joint statement of interest with a view to pursuing this partnership.
