  3. Intense sequence for CNES, DLR and JAXA- Hayabusa2 and MASCOT arrive at asteroid Ryugu

    The Japanese Hayabusa2 space probe has reached the end of its 3.2-billion-kilometre journey with its passenger, the French-German MASCOT (Mobile Asteroid Surface Scout) lander. Launched in 2014, Hayabusa2 has completed three orbits of the Sun in four years, after which it began a few weeks ago its very slow approach to its final destination. Since today, Hayabusa2 is now escorting Ryugu at a close distance of some 20 kilometres, collecting images and data from this celestial object that spins on itself in a little more than seven and a half hours. MASCOT is scheduled to land on the asteroid in early October.

    L’atterrisseur franco-allemand MASCOT a atteint la surface de l’astéroïde Ryugu le 3 octobre 2018. Après presque 4 ans à bord de la sonde japonaise Hayabusa2, il a sauté à la surface en effectuant des mesures et en prenant des photos. Elles constituent les premières images à ce niveau de détails d’un astéroïde carboné, et ses premiers résultats viennent de paraître aujourd'hui dans la revue Science. Patrick Michel est co-auteur de l’étude, membre de l’équipe scientifique d’Hayabusa2 et de MASCOT, et directeur de recherche au CNRS à l’Observatoire de la Côte d’Azur. Et nous en discutons avec lui pour découvrir la surface de l’astéroïde.

    After its release from Hayabusa2 today just before 04:00 and a short free-fall descent at an estimated speed of 15 cm/s, MASCOT (Mobile Asteroid surface SCOuT) successfully landed at the MA-9 site in the southern hemisphere of asteroid Ryugu, after bouncing several times on the particularly inhospitable surface that is strewn with rocks (according to pictures taken by Hayabusa2’s camera from an altitude of 6 kilometres) and where temperatures are not yet known.

    Tuesday 2 October, the Hayabusa2 probe descended from its reference orbit 20 kilometres above asteroid Ryugu to position itself just 55 metres from the surface.
