  1. Gaia unveils ghost galaxy

    The Gaia mission has uncovered a major event in the formation of our Milky Way galaxy, now thought to be the result of a merger with a smaller galaxy called Gaia-Enceladus. “This discovery completely changes our perception of galactic structures as we thought we knew them”, according to Carine Babusiaux, a research scientist at the IPAG planetology and astrophysics institute/OSUG, the Grenoble universe sciences observatory, in charge of simulations for the Gaia mission and co-author of a paper announcing the discovery in the journal Nature.

  4. Triton’s atmosphere in the starlight

    A campaign led by astrophysicist Bruno Sicardy used a very rare alignment between the Earth, the largest moon of Neptune and a star to analyse the atmosphere of Triton. It is a big first, the coordinates provided by the GAIA orbital telescope set up the observation points.

    La mission Gaia vient de mettre en lumière un évènement majeur survenu lors de la formation de notre galaxie. La Voie lactée serait le fruit d'une fusion avec une plus petite galaxie baptisée Gaia-Encelade. "Cette découverte bouleverse les frontières des structures galactiques telles qu'on les envisageait jusqu'à présent", estime Carine Babusiaux, chercheuse à l'IPAG/OSUG, responsable des simulations pour la mission Gaia et cosignataire de la publication parue dans Nature.

  10. GAIA successful launch on 19 December 2013

    The European Space Agency’s GAIA satellite was sent aloft by a Soyuz launcher Thursday 19 December from the Guiana Space Centre. The launcher lifted off as scheduled at 10:12 CET and the satellite was released into orbit 42 minutes later. It will now take one month to reach the L2 Lagrange point, a very special point in the Sun-Earth system beyond Earth as seen from the Sun, some 1.5 million km away, 5 times the Earth-Moon distance. The L2 point orbits the Sun with the same period as Earth. GAIA will thus survey the entire galaxy in the space of a year. The Toulouse Space Centre houses one of the 6 European data centres of the GAIA mission, expected to last 5 years.
