  1. Next Soyuz mission from CSG to launch MetOp-C with France’s IASI instrument

    On the night of 6-7 November, Soyuz will lift off for the 19th time from Europe’s spaceport at the Guiana Space Centre (CSG) carrying MetOp-C (Meteorological Operational Polar satellite) with the French IASI instrument (Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer). MetOp-C was built by Airbus Defence & Space for Eumetsat, the European Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites. This will be Soyuz’s second launch from the CSG this year and the third and last satellite launch for the Eumetsat Polar System (EPS) dedicated to operational meteorology.

    The IASI (Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer) mission led by CNES in partnership with Eumetsat relies on three weather satellites in low Earth orbit: MetOp-A, launched in October 2006, MetOp-B in September 2012 and MetOp-C in November 2018. Each of these satellites is carrying a IASI instrument installed by CNES and built by Thales Alenia Space. Data from the three instruments support weather forecasting and are helping to monitor Earth’s environment and climate.

    Europe’s weather forecasting system is set to benefit soon from a new series of spacecraft, with the 1st of the MetOp satellites set for launch on 17 July.     During the night of 6-7 November, Soyuz accomplished a flawless launch from the Guiana Space Centre (CSG), Europe’s spaceport in Kourou, placing the European Metop-C (Meteorological Operational Polar) satellite into Sun-synchronous polar orbit with the French IASI instrument (Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer). Metop-C was built by Airbus Defence & Space for Eumetsat, the European Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites. This was Soyuz’s 19th launch from the CSG and its second this year from French Guiana.

  7. Pollution: New ammonia emission sources detected from space

    Researchers from the CNRS1 and the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) have prepared the first global map of the distribution of atmospheric ammonia (NH3) by analyzing measurements taken by satellites between 2008 and 2016. The IASI interferometer developed by the CNES allowed them to catalog more than 200 ammonia sources, two-thirds of which had never been identified before. These sources are essentially sites of intensive livestock production and industrial activity. The team’s findings are published in Nature (December 5).

  9. IASI pinpoints 248 ammonia emission hotspots

    By analysing measurements from the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI), a French-Belgian team has compiled the first global map of ammonia emissions with a resolution of one kilometre. The team identified 248 hotspots, 85% of them originating from intensive livestock farming and industrial nitrogen fertilizer plants. Their results were published on 5 December 2018 in the journal Nature.
