  1. Proxima mission Thomas Pesquet to perform experiments conceived by young scientists under supervision of CNES’s Youth Education department

    As part of Thomas Pesquet’s Proxima mission on the International Space Station (ISS) scheduled from November 2016 to May 2017, CNES’s Youth Education department has issued a call for proposals to university and high-school students for innovative educational experiments to be tested out in microgravity conditions.

  4. 25th National Science Week- CNES and ESA present Thomas Pesquet’s mission

    The 25th National Science Week, organized by the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Research from Friday 7 to Sunday 16 October, opened today at the Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie in Paris. On this occasion, French ESA astronaut Thomas Pesquet, the patron of this year’s event, presented his future Proxima mission on the International Space Station (ISS) to the public and several hundred children. CNES and ESA also took advantage of the event to sign an agreement covering the scientific experiments he will be performing on the ISS.

    Tuesday 3 October at the Toulouse Space Centre (CST), Thomas Pesquet came to see the managers of the experiments developed by CNES for the Proxima mission. Together, they reviewed how the experiments went on the ground and aboard the International Space Station (ISS), and discussed initial lessons learned. CADMOS is the unit at CNES that developed and monitored the seven CNES experiments on Thomas’ mission. No fewer than 35 engineers were involved. For the CNES team, Proxima is a total success that has confirmed the expertise, technical know-how and passion driving the French space sector.

  8. Post-tour de Thomas Pesquet- La mission Proxima: le CNES au service de la science

    Mardi 3 octobre, au Centre Spatial de Toulouse (CST), Thomas Pesquet a rencontré les responsables des expériences développées par le CNES, dans le cadre de la mission Proxima. Ensemble, ils sont revenus sur le déroulé de celles-ci, au sol et à bord de la station spatiale internationale et ont fait part des premiers enseignements à tirer. Le CADMOS est la structure du CNES qui a développé et suivi les sept expériences CNES de la mission de Thomas. Pas moins de 35 ingénieurs ont été impliqués. Pour l’équipe du CNES, la mission Proxima est un succès total qui a confirmé l’expertise, le savoir-faire technique et la passion, qui caractérisent le secteur spatial français.

  10. CNES’s DECLIC instrument en route to the International Space Station

    First launched in 2009, the DECLIC scientific instrument was recovered and returned to Earth by NASA in 2014 after a five-year stay on the International Space Station (ISS) for maintenance by CNES, which designed and built the instrument. The result of a joint science effort with NASA, DECLIC is now on its way back to the station aboard the Cygnus resupply vehicle successfully sent aloft by an Antares launcher during the night of Monday 17 to Tuesday 18 October. Scheduled to dock with the station during the night of Saturday 22 October, Cygnus is also carrying scientific equipment for Thomas Pesquet’s Proxima mission.

    Surveying Earth from its 400-kilometre vantage point in orbit, the International Space Station (ISS) is poised for two key events at the end of the year on which France will be casting a close eye. The first will see three new astronauts arriving, among them Frenchman Thomas Pesquet, who will be conducting the Proxima mission designed and planned by CNES and the CADMOS centre for the development of microgravity applications and space operations (see p. 8). And in December, a more strategic event will be taking place in Lucerne, Switzerland, where the ESA council meeting at ministerial level is set to decide on its future contributions to the ISS after 2020.

    Le lancement de la 25ème édition de la Fête de la science, organisée du vendredi 7 au dimanche 16 octobre par le Ministère de l’Education nationale, de l’Enseignement supérieur et de la Recherche, a eu lieu ce jour à la Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie de Paris. A cette occasion, l’astronaute français de l’ESA, Thomas Pesquet, parrain de l’évènement, a rencontré le grand public et plusieurs centaines d’enfants auxquels il a présenté la mission PROXIMA. L’occasion pour le CNES et l’ESA de signer un accord encadrant la réalisation des expériences scientifiques que mènera Thomas dans la station spatiale internationale.
