  3. CNES in Moscow for 20th anniversary of the International Space Station

    Monday 19 November, CNES took part in a conference to mark the 20th anniversary of the International Space Station (ISS). Entitled “Space is an Open Area for International Cooperation and Development”, the conference was held in Moscow by Russian federal space agency Roscosmos.

  6. AMINO to probe the origins of life

    The 3rd exobiology experiment devised by the LISA laboratory in Créteil, France, supported by CNES, lifted off on board a Russian Soyuz launcher on 26 November. Called AMINO, it aims to study the viability of certain organic molecules in space, like for example those found in comets.

  9. Long-duration ISS mission under the watchful eye of CADMOS

    Space Shuttle Discovery lifted off from Florida yesterday. European astronaut Thomas Reiter on board is en route to the International Space Station, where he will be spending 6 to 7 months aloft. This long-duration mission will be closely watched by the CADMOS1 centre in France, responsible for monitoring experiments on the station and communications between Reiter and teams on the ground.

  10. ATV- the European ISS resupply ship

    The Jules Verne, the first of Europe’s Automated Transfer Vehicles designed to ferry supplies to the International Space Station (ISS), arrived at the Guiana Space Centre in Kourou late in July. Since its arrival, CNES teams have been preparing the ATV for launch in specially altered facilities, under the watchful eye of the director of operations. It is scheduled to make its maiden flight on 31 January 2008, on a specially adapted Ariane 5 launcher.

    Geneviève Fioraso, France’s Minister for Higher Education and Research, Jean-Jacques Dordain, Director General of the European Space Agency (ESA), and CNES President Jean-Yves Le Gall announced Monday 17 March that French astronaut Thomas Pesquet will make his first spaceflight in late 2016.

    After a 12-day voyage across the Atlantic, the Jules Verne ATV*—the first fully automatic uncrewed cargo vessel built in Europe—has arrived safely at the Guyana Space Centre (CSG) ahead of launch early next year. Under CNES supervision, the mission will be a major first for Ariane 5 and the CSG.

    Surveying Earth from its 400-kilometre vantage point in orbit, the International Space Station (ISS) is poised for two key events at the end of the year on which France will be casting a close eye. The first will see three new astronauts arriving, among them Frenchman Thomas Pesquet, who will be conducting the Proxima mission designed and planned by CNES and the CADMOS centre for the development of microgravity applications and space operations (see p. 8). And in December, a more strategic event will be taking place in Lucerne, Switzerland, where the ESA council meeting at ministerial level is set to decide on its future contributions to the ISS after 2020.
