    Strateole-2 is an international Earth-observation programme using stratospheric superpressure balloons being led by CNES and a consortium of research laboratories attached to CNRS, the French national scientific research centre, including LMD and LATMOS at the Pierre-Simon Laplace Institute (see below). The programme’s goal is to study atmospheric dynamics in the intertropical zone. Three campaigns are planned from the autumn of 2019 to the spring of 2025 to acquire in-situ measurements and remote-sensing data from the balloons. The first balloon launch is scheduled from 1 November. The first two flights will be carrying ‘dummy’ gondolas without scientific instruments to see how the balloons and the onboard flight management system behave at the start of the flight. The window for the first four science flights runs from 17 to 30 November.

    Stratéole-2 est un programme d’observation par ballons pressurisés stratosphériques, en collaboration internationale, proposé par le CNES et un consortium de laboratoires du CNRS (dont le LMD et le LATMOS de l’Institut Pierre-Simon Laplace), qui a pour but d’étudier la dynamique de l’atmosphère dans la zone intertropicale. Il comprend trois campagnes de mesures, de l’automne 2019 au printemps 2025 qui permettront de recueillir des observations in situ, mais également en télédétection depuis les ballons. Le premier lâcher est prévu à partir du 1er novembre. Les deux premiers vols emporteront des nacelles « à blanc » sans instrumentation scientifique afin d’observer le comportement des ballons et du système de gestion embarqué, en début de vol. La fenêtre des quatre premiers lâchers scientifiques est programmée du 17 au 30 novembre.

    On 18 January, Guyancourt's integration and testing platform began assembling the first scientific instrument in the gondola for the STRATEOLE-22 project. The SAWfPHY hygrometer is developed by the Dynamic Meteorology Laboratory.

    The SAWfPHY, B-Bop and LOAC instruments loaded in the ZEPHYR gondola arrived for integration. These instruments will respectively perform measurements of water vapour, ozone and aerosols during the STRATEOLE-2 flights.
